Contractive Metrics for a Boltzmann equation for granular gases: Diffusive equilibria

چکیده
We quantify the long-time behavior of a system of (partially) inelastic particles in a stochastic thermostat by means of the contractivity of a suitable metric in the set of probability measures. Existence, uniqueness, boundedness of moments and regularity of a steady state are derived from this basic property. The solutions of the kinetic model are proved to converge exponentially as t →∞ to this diffusive equilibrium in this distance metrizing the weak convergence of measures. Then, we prove a uniform bound in time on Sobolev norms of the solution, provided the initial data has a finite norm in the corresponding Sobolev space. These results are then combined, using interpolation inequalities, to obtain exponential convergence to the diffusive equilibrium in the strong L1-norm, as well as various Sobolev norms.

Integral Representation of the Linear Boltzmann Operator for Granular Gas Dynamics with Applications
We investigate the properties of the collision operator Q associated to the linear Boltzmann equation for dissipative hard-spheres arising in granular gas dynamics. We establish that, as in the case of non–dissipative interactions, the gain collision operator is an integral operator whose kernel is made explicit. One deduces from this result a complete picture of the spectrum of Q in an Hilbert...
متن کاملHeat flux in a vibrated granular gas: the diffusive heat conductivity coefficient
The transport coefficient coupling heat flux and density gradient in a granular gas is measured by taking advantage of the existence of a minimum in the temperature profile of an open vibrated granular medium. This temperature inversion is closely related to the existence of the new transport coefficient. Particle simulations using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method will be used to comput...
متن کاملRelaxation rate, diffusion approximation and Fick’s law for inelastic scattering Boltzmann models
We consider the linear dissipative Boltzmann equation describing inelastic interactions of particles with a fixed background. For the simplified model of Maxwell molecules first, we give a complete spectral analysis, and deduce from it the optimal rate of exponential convergence to equilibrium. Moreover we show the convergence to the heat equation in the diffusive limit and compute explicitely ...

متن کاملFree Cooling and High-Energy Tails of Granular Gases with Variable Restitution Coefficient
We develop in this paper the first systematic treatment of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation for granular gases with non constant restitution coefficient, generalizing a large number of the results obtained recently for homogeneous granular gases with constant restitution coefficient to a broader class of physical restitution coefficients that depend on the collision impact velocity. Our analy...
